A 88.22-carat fetches HK$108 Million at Sotheby’s

3-4-2019

A 88.22-carat diamond fetched a jaw-dropping HK$108 Million at Sotheby’s Hong Kong Sale of Magnificent Jewels and Jadeite. It is one of the only three oval diamonds that weighs over 50 carats ever at auctions. The spectacular diamond was purchased by a Japanese father and named after his eldest daughter as the ‘Manami Star’. Three bidders from the region competed for the stone.

The 88.22-carat was cut from a 242-carat rough from Botswana. Patti Wong, chairman of Sotheby’s Asia commented: “When you think that one ton of mined earth yields less than a carat of diamond, and that high-quality diamonds over 10 carats are a rarity, the discovery of a 242-carat rough, of gem quality and exceptional size, is nothing short of a miracle”.

The result of the Sale of Magnificent Jewels and Jadeite are mixed. Among 200 auction items, over a third of the lots failed to hammer out.
