AEC summit forges closer ties in the region

The 7th AEC + 12 Gems and Jewellery Presidents’ Summit was held 7-8 November 2018 at Intercontinental Shanghai Expo, Shanghai, China. Organised by the AEC+10 Regional Secretary Office, Donghao Lansheng (Group) Co, Ltd and the Shanghai Gems & Jade Exchange, the summit aimed to enhance trade facilitation and information exchange in the gemstone and jewellery industry of the participating countries and regions. The Hong Kong Jewellery & Jade Manufacturers Association (HKJJA) has been representing Hong Kong at the summit for the seventh consecutive year.

Two closed meetings of AEC members and association presidents were scheduled in the afternoon of 7 November, which was followed by a welcome dinner for over 80 trade association representatives from ASEAN countries including Cambodia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, Philippines, Thailand and Vietnam, supporting countries including Belgium, India, Israel, Italy, Japan, Lithuania, New Zealand, the United States, Turkey and United Kingdom, together with Shanghai and Hong Kong.

Key sections of the summit came on the second day. After the welcome speeches by organisers, a panel discussion on enhancing jewellery trade between China and ASEAN countries was held. Industry leaders from Thailand, Malaysia, Philippines, Myanmar, India and China entered into a vigorous discussion and generated a multitude of constructive ideas, laying the ground for further cooperation in future. The fruitful discussion was followed by a number of MoU signing ceremonies which helped establish stronger ties among the players in the region.

HKJJA to host 2020 summit

During the summit, the organising committee confirmed that Turkey will host the next summit in 2019, while HKJJA from Hong Kong is the organiser of the 2020 edition.

Ken Lo, chairman of HKJJA, expressed his gratitude after the announcement. He said that the year of 2020 is the best time for hosting the summit when the association is celebrating its 55th anniversary. “Hong Kong is the world’s trading hub for jewellery, diamonds, gemstones and pearls. It is renowned for its world-class infrastructure, facilities and capacity for conventions and tourism. Together with HKJJA’s global reach and unparalleled experiences in hosting premier events, it is a natural fit for HKJJA to organise the 2020 ASEAN Gems & Jewellery Presidents’ Summit,” he said.

“The year of 2020 also marks HKJJA’s 55th anniversary. We’d like to take this opportunity to welcome all of you to join us for the celebration of such an important milestone in the development of both HKJJA and the jewellery industry in the region,” he added.
