Exquisite design transcends industry boundaries

Designer unfolds the elegance of classic lavender fei cui cabochon as a flower in blossom to portray a life full of the joys of spring. Flowers gather strength during the tormenting winter and are in full blossom with wild exuberance which symbolise a life process. In Amy Vong’s The Colour of Spring pendant ring, the lavender fei cui represents the nobleness of life and the diamonds set on the petals glitter like morning dew denoting vitality.

Before joining in the jewellery industry, Vong took up the management duties in her family’s garment factory for over three decades. She developed a number of styles with ordinary fabrics which turned out to be extraordinary clothes thanks to proper arrangements such as tailoring. The experiences have cultivated her fashion sense and colour-matching technique which is no doubt an advantage to her jewellery design career. For her, jewellery is more than a luxury accessory; it is an essential element of a total look.

When it comes to fei cui, you can tell how passionate Amy Vong is. She is devoted herself to liking, collecting and designing fei cui. She is well aware that a good design can unleash the beauty of fei cui; and that was the reason for her participation in the 2017 International Design Competition on Trendy Fei Cui Jewellery. Although she has worked as a jewellery designer for eight years only, her experiences as a designer has cultivated for more than 30 years already. Her Macau-based workshop is a huge success. However, being a pursuer of excellence, she aspires to show her creations to the international audience through the contest, while expanding her social circle abroad and enhancing her design skills. She decided to send The Colour of Spring pendant ring, a symbol of vitality, to the competition after careful consideration.

The award presentation ceremony in Beijing was an eye-opening event to Vong where she came to realise good fei cui piece is not merely about aesthetics, but also the cultural message it carries. As a gem with rich Chinese cultural heritage, fei cui has a range of appearances and colours. A piece of fine fei cui work whispers you the message that the designer tries to deliver. “Fei cui has different forms of expressions indeed,” she said. She hopes to talk with young designers in future and inspires them to design trendy fei cui pieces with traditional culture. (Text and photo courtesy: Jewelry World, Taiwan)
