Old for new

As the whole world pursues innovation and novelty, one Italian jewellers goes back to history and the root of heritage for design inspiration to wow modern jewellery aficionados. Established in 1970, Michelangelo Gioielli has always created jewellery that presents the charms of Italy amidst the transition of eras.

“We are interested in expressing the ancient styles. We want to show people the styles of the Roman and Byzantine periods, which constitute the notion of ‘Made in Italy’,” said designer Marcello Fontana. The signature collections are labelled with distinct styles that are symbolic to historic periods such as the Etruscan, Roman and Bourbon eras. It does not come as a surprise that the aesthetics of the brand echoes that of famous works produced in early Renaissance. For instance, the Siena ring preserves the essence of the cameo medallion worn on Botticelli’s Portrait of a Young Lady.

Fontana said the brand was named after the famous artist and ‘Renaissance Man’ Michelangelo. In fact the company and the artist share the same place of origin – Caprese Michelangelo. Also from the Siena collection, the necklace pays tributes to the brilliant and contrasted colours on Michelangelo’s renowned painting The Delphic Sibyl.
