METS 2015 supplement (I)

THE second edition of METS – Machinery, Equipment, Technology and Supplies for Jewellery & Watch Industry (METS 2015) will be held from 24 to 27 June at Star Hall, Kowloonbay International Trade & Exhibition Centre, Hong Kong. In a bid to boost the number of show goers, organiser HKJJA Exhibition Services Limited has stepped up a number of strategies including the recruitment of highly competitive machinery and equipment for Asian buyers, free on-site metal and stone testing services, etc.

Auto diamond sorting system

Hong Kong-based Eternity Manufacturing Ltd will be bringing the latest automatic diamond sorting machine ‘Auto DIASSORTERTM’ to METS 2015.

Jointly developed by Eternity Manufacturing and the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology, Auto DIASSORTERTM is capable of sorting diamonds ranging from 0.8mm to 3mm in diameter according to their colour (from D to J) and clarity (from VVS to I) automatically.

The system employs the latest technology in image processing that determines the properties of the diamonds by analysing images captured by two high resolution cameras. The grading of each diamond takes six seconds on average.

The operation is fully automatic where diamonds of the same colour or clarity will be grouped together in a designated bin. The graded results will be shown on the LCD display. The system facilitates automatic sorting of diamonds in large quantities.

The supplier is considering integrating a third party CVD diamond tester with Auto DIASSORTERTM so that the sorting of CVD diamonds can be carried out automatically.

Laser 3D printer

Sève Studio, which mainly manufactures 3D printers and CNC machines, and provides interactive design solutions, will showcase its award-winning LF-M laser 3D printer with a newly developed small CNC machine that specifically caters to the needs of the jewellery industry in METS 2015.

The LF-M laser 3D printer had been awarded 2014 Hong Kong Awards for Industries - Certificate of Merit. It is designed with automatic layered molding technology which utilises laser irradiation to harden resin to produce the desired shape according to the imported 3D graphics with a smooth surface. It also boasts a compact size without sacrificing professional performance and high accuracy and efficiency. The molding precision of professional models could reach up to 0.01mm.

Join contest for software free trial

Onsite participants of the ‘3DESIGN Asia & Oceania Jewellery Design Contest 2015’ will be eligible for a free trial of 3D CAD software offered by Fable Applied Technology Co.

Distributed worldwide for almost 10 years, 3DESIGN and 3SHAPER software that Fable will exhibit at METS 2015 are specialised in design and manufacturing of jewellery, watches and fashion accessories thanks to their advanced jewellery 3D modelling features, rendering and free form shaping.

To promote the use of 3D CAD software and modern jewellery design techniques globally, and to strengthen the status of digital 3D design in the industry, Fable co-organises the ‘3DESIGN Asia and Oceania Jewellery Design Contest’ and will arrange onsite registration at METS 2015 where participants can receive free pre-competition training with the software.

Themed ‘Home’, the contest requires participants to design jewellery in precious metals to show their interpretation of the theme, creativity and the skillful use of 3D CAD software.

Free diamond testing

At METS 2015, buyers are free to use the diamond testing service by using DS3000 Natural Diamond Selector provided by Bao Guang Instruments, Hong Kong. The avant-garde device is famed for differentiating natural diamonds (Type Ia, white to yellow) from their synthetic counterparts (including CVD, HPHT, etc). It takes 0.6 second for a single sample, either a loose diamond or a diamond sets in jewellery.

Strong Turkish support

METS 2015 is seeing a strong participation of renowned machinery and equipment suppliers from Turkey, one of the world’s richest sources of state-of-the-art machinery and equipment for jewellery and watch making, said the organiser.

The Jewellery Exporters’ Association of Turkey (JTR), has received a funding from the Ministry of Turkey, which offers subsidies to those who take part in METS 2015. The initiative is said to boost the number of Turkish participation.

The first METS was held in June 2014 at AsiaWorld-Expo. Due to the remote venue, a large number of exhibitors urged the organiser to find another venue for the 2nd edition. METS 2015 is going to be held in Kowloon Bay, a more accessible area; together with the launch of various initiatives for buyers, the organiser has anticipated more traffic. This year marks the 50th anniversary of Hong Kong Jewellery & Jade Manufacturers Association (HKJJA), the mother company of METS organiser who has benefited from the large-scale global joint-promotion with HKJJA.
