Blues overwhelm at Sotheby’s NY

Sotheby’s New York auction of Jewels & Objects of Vertu from Mrs Paul Mellon’s collection, 20-21 November 2014, concluded with a total of US$45 million or HK$349 million, more than double its high estimate. A 9.75-carat rare fancy vivid blue diamond (photo)was sold to a Hong Kong private collector for US$32.6 million (US$3.3 million per carat) or HK$254.6 million (HK$26.1 million per carat), a new auction record for any blue diamond and price-per-carat for any diamond. The blue stone was named The Zoe Diamond by the buyer. A pendant set with a 9.15-carat fancy blue diamond achieved the second highest at US$2.96 million or approximately HK$23 million.
