CIBJO releases 'Laboratory-Grown Diamond Guidance'

14-10-2020

The World Jewellery Confederation (CIBJO) has introduced lab-grown diamond terminology, Laboratory-Grown Diamond Guidance, available for review by affiliated companies and national associations, in an attempt to create a standard for the sector.

This is the final stage in a two-year process to create a harmonised standard for lab-grown diamond. The guideline outlines clear principles for lab-grown diamond description, due diligence measures to follow for merchandising and event management companies.

According to the body’s statement, the guidance is to provide complete and unambiguous information about products that consumers are purchasing, ensuring their confidence. “This requires clear and accurate information that the diamonds were created industrially, and not through geological processes, as is the case with natural diamonds.”

The standard grading report implies “a degree of rarity of the product,” a CIBJO spokesperson said. “But on the other hand, the consumer has a right to know what the components of the product are. The important element is that the term ‘grading’ is taken out.”
