Gübelin announces its first research scholarship

The Dr Eduard Gübelin Association for Research & Identification of Precious Stones was founded in 2003 by Eduard Gübelin, the third generation of the Gübelin family dedicating to gemmological research. On 18 September 2014, the association announced Gemma Emily Roberts, a PhD student of the University of Sydney, as the winner of its first research scholarship at the September Hong Kong Jewellery and Gem Fair. Her research project is about the environmental condition of the opal formation, as well as the geology and the environmental system of Mars’ surface.

Established in 2014, the Dr Eduard Gübelin Research Scholarship is an annual grant of CHF 30,000 to support a cutting-edge research project conducted by a MSc/PhD student or post-doctoral researcher in earth sciences, crystallography, chemistry, physics, material sciences, archaeology, biology and other related academic fields. In this edition, a total of 172 applications from over the world were judged by a scientific committee of renowned geologists in the world.

In the press conference, the committee commended that the winning project is highly innovative and contributes to the advancement of gemmological knowledge. Roberts told Hong Kong Jewellery: “I am very excited and glad that what I was doing meets perfectly the research purpose. With the scholarship and the equipment provided by Gübelin, I hope to carry on my research in the future, especially on the inclusion of opals.”
