555.55-carat Black Dimond Unveiled at Sotheby’s Auction

The extremely rare carbonado diamonds are 2.6 to 3.8 billion years old and said to have been created from a meteoric impact or come from outer space. They are found only in Brazil and Central Africa. “The Enigma” is the world’s largest fancy black natural colour diamond and was listed as the largest cut diamond in the Guinness Book of World Records back in 2006.

Despite the fact that it is almost impossible to cut and polish diamonds with a black coloration, it was cut with 55 facets. Sophie Stevens, a jewellery specialist at Sotheby’s Dubai said, “the shape of the diamond is based on the Middle-Eastern palm symbol of the Khamsa, which stands for strength and it stands for protection.” Khamsa in Arabic means five. “The Enigma” is going on display in Dubai, Los Angeles and London before the online auction from 3 to 9 February with no reserve. Payment by cryptocurrency will be accepted.
