Nano diamonds to used to make virus-killing masks

1-4-2020

Master Dynamic (MD), a Hong Kong-based engineering laboratory who partnered with Chow Tai Fook (CTF) to develop the nano-marking technology for diamonds claims nano-diamonds could be a coating of surgical masks for virus killing.

Researchers believe a coating of salt crystals and nano-diamonds will destroy viruses, rather than filtering them out. According to the company's CEO Tom Kong, a small charge of electricity transmitted through diamonds when in contact with the virus, will rupture the virus’s cell membrane and eliminate it.

"When people think about diamonds, they are normally thinking about jewellery where the cost is at a premium. But we're using industrial-grade nano-diamonds, not jewellery-grade diamonds, so the cost is much cheaper," said the company's CEO Tom Kong. The company is exploring ways to apply this specific technology to the non-woven material of surgical masks, which may be used to produce a high-performance, breathable and waterproof mask. A set price is yet unknown.
