Hong Kong Design Institute (HKDI) showcased designs from graduates of higher diploma in jewellery design and technology, higher diploma in jewellery and image product design and bachelor’s degree in jewellery and metalwork during HKDI Design Show 2019 held at Loupe in PMQ from 5 to 30 July. The show gave the opportunity to present the best-selected graduates’ work of jewellery and timepieces (photos). Daniel Chan, HKDI head of Department of Architecture, Interior and Product Design said during his opening speech: “Programmes curated by HKDI teach students not only how to design and make jewellery, but also practical skills in the business world such as promotional text writing, team communication and jewellery display.”
A partnership programme between the Sheffield Institute of Arts of Sheffield Hallam University and HKDI, the bachelor’s degree in jewellery and metalwork is the one and only collaborated jewellery design programme in Hong Kong. The university started as a steel, tool and cutlery making capital of the world and now is one of the top modern universities in the UK for design. The six-year-old programme encourages students to experiment, innovate and explore a range of precious and non-precious metals and other materials available to them and pave the way for them as a professional jewellery designer in the future.
Lam Yuet Wan, one of the graduates of the degree programme this year has won the championship of the student group with her Aurora watch and the 1st runner-up of the student group with her Bridge ring at the 35th Watch and Clock Design Competition and Hong Kong Jewellery Design Competition earlier this year. Prior to the degree course, she completed the higher diploma in jewellery and image product design. She said: “I have learnt timepiece design, 3D drawing and skills to use rendition software. The HKDI programme has laid the foundation for me in design. The bachelor’s programme thereafter enabled me to further grasp the skills of jewellery design and learn how to turn imagination into material
objects.”
