The Natural Diamond Council (NDC) has unveiled a major rebranding, dropping "natural" from its public title to become The Diamond Collective. The abrupt relaunch, featuring the tagline "Old Soul, New Energy", marks a decisive strategic shift as the industry-funded not-for-profit seeks to rebuild consumer appetite amidst falling prices, mine closures, and aggressive competition from lab-grown synthetics.
Explaining the rationale behind the overhaul, chief executive Amber Pepper stated the organisation was moving from playing "defence" to going on the offensive. Dropping the qualifier "natural" reflects a firmer stance that authentic diamonds remain the undisputed original, requiring no defensive labels. The rebranded entity aims to transition from isolated marketing campaigns to a unified, proactive global movement.
Under its renewed focus, the organisation has outlined three core pillars: uniting the trade through a new Global Steering Committee, protecting consumer confidence via strict provenance tracking and a universal Trustmark, and inspiring younger buyers through sustained partnerships with high fashion. It will also launch a Diamond Desire Index to track consumer sentiment across key markets including the United States, China, and India.
While branding experts caution that omitting "natural" could risk consumer confusion with synthetic alternatives, the broader trade impact signals a crucial evolution towards inclusivity and modernised luxury storytelling—aiming to ensure ancient gems resonate with a new generation.
