De Beers unveils faster LGD detector

De Beers Group has launched its latest desktop diamond screening device, SynthDetect 2, promising to slash processing times dramatically for manufacturers, laboratories, and retailers.

Unveiled on 15 September at the Hong Kong Gem & Jewellery Show, the second-generation instrument can scan a full tray of loose melee diamonds or set jewellery in under five minutes—a process that previously took around half an hour.

Developed by the company's science & technology division, SynthDetect 2 can examine stones ranging from 0.001 to 10 carats in the D-to-J colour spectrum. Utilising time-resolved photoluminescence, it detects intrinsic physical characteristics of natural diamonds to categorise stones into three groups: Natural, Synthetic, or Refer for stones requiring further laboratory testing.

The upgraded system incorporates enhanced automation, including streamlined testing workflows and automated report generation. Rotational accessories also allow for seamless testing of complex pieces such as bangles, tennis bracelets, and necklaces alongside loose stones.

The launch comes as the global diamond trade faces mounting market pressure from lab-grown alternatives, particularly in smaller, lower-value stone segments. By accelerating verification procedures, De Beers aims to help businesses strengthen pipeline integrity amidst expanding synthetic supply.
