Hong Kong’s retail sector maintained its upward momentum in July 2026, driven by a powerful surge in demand for luxury goods such as jewellery and timepieces.
According to figures released by the Census and Statistics Department on 31 August, total retail sales revenue rose 4.5 percent year-on-year to HK$31.02 billion, marking the 15th consecutive month of expansion for the territory. The growth was predominantly propelled by the hard-luxury category—encompassing jewellery, watches, clocks, and valuable gifts—which surged by 20 percent year-on-year to reach HK$4.89 billion.
For the first seven months of the year, performance in the luxury segment was even more pronounced, with total revenue climbing 24 percent to HK$35.95 billion. Overall retail sales between January and July advanced 9 percent to HK$234.01 billion.
A government spokesperson attributed the ongoing resilience to broader economic expansion, stable labour market conditions, and rising household incomes, which together continue to underpin consumer confidence. Official commentary also highlighted an accelerating consumer shift toward digital retail channels. Looking ahead, local authorities remain optimistic that sustained macroeconomic stability and expanding online sales will further reinforce retail momentum across the region.
