AGTA tightens rules on lab-grown gemstones

The American Gem Trade Association (AGTA) has updated its “Code of Ethics” and released the 17th edition of its Gemstone Information Manual, enforcing stricter naming standards for manufactured stones to protect consumer trust.

Under the new regulations approved by AGTA’s board, members are now required to use the word “synthetic” when describing any manufactured gemstone sharing the same chemical, physical, and optical properties as its natural counterpart. Crucially, the term “lab-grown” can no longer be used on its own. Retail jewellers must describe these materials as either “synthetic” or “man-made” alongside the gemstone name, such as “synthetic ruby”.

The decision underscores AGTA’s firm commitment to natural-coloured gemstones, building on its 2024 policy that banned laboratory-created diamonds and gemstones from its trade show floors.
