Gemfields has announced the discovery of “Imboo”, an extraordinary emerald weighing 11,685 carats, at its Kagem mine in Zambia. This remarkable gem, named after the Bemba word for "buffalo," is set to feature in the company's high-quality emerald auction from 25 August to 11 September 2025.
Unearthed on 3 August by geologist Dharanidhar Seth and chiseller Justin Banda, “Imboo” is the largest emerald ever found at Kagem, which is 75-percent owned by Gemfields in partnership with the Zambian government. Adrian Banks, Gemfields’ managing director of product and sales, praised the stone's “intense, verdant green” and noted its potential to yield several fine-quality emeralds for high-jewellery suites.
The geological conditions at Kagem, where three rock domains converge, create ideal conditions for emerald formation. The new owner of “Imboo” will have access to Provenance Proof’s nanoparticle-tagging technology, ensuring traceability even after the gem is cut and polished. (Photo courtesy: Gemfields)
