In a remarkable development for the global diamond industry, De Beers Group, in partnership with Angola’s state-owned diamond company Endiama, has announced the discovery of a new kimberlite field in Angola. This marks the first significant find by De Beers in over 30 years, signalling a potential resurgence in diamond exploration in the region.
The breakthrough occurred during recent drilling activities aimed at high-priority targets identified from airborne surveys conducted earlier this year. The initial drill hole successfully intersected kimberlite, the crucial host rock for diamonds, in July 2025.
Al Cook, CEO of De Beers Group, expressed enthusiasm about the discovery, stating, "Angola is, in our view, one of the best places on the planet to look for diamonds, and this discovery reinforces our confidence." He highlighted the effective collaboration with President João Lourenço’s government, praising efforts to enhance transparency and create a conducive environment for investment.
This milestone not only marks a significant achievement for De Beers but also heralds a new era for Angola, which has only explored about 40 percent of its diamond-rich territories. With ongoing commitment and investment, the country may soon enhance its position in the global diamond market. (Photo courtesy: De Beers)
