IGI reaffirms commitment to grading LGDs amidst industry shift

The International Gemological Institute (IGI) announced on 15 July that it will continue grading lab-grown diamonds using the same universal 4Cs criteria that it applies to natural diamonds. This decision comes as other major laboratories, including HRD Antwerp and the Gemological Institute of America (GIA), move away from such practices.

IGI, which pioneered the grading of lab-grown diamonds in 2005, reaffirmed its commitment to transparency and consistency in a statement: “At IGI, we’re not just grading diamonds – we’re safeguarding the trust that consumers place in us.”

In contrast, HRD Antwerp announced plans in June to cease grading loose lab-grown diamonds by next year. The lab, owned by the Antwerp World Diamond Centre (AWDC), cited consumer confusion and a desire to align with Antwerp’s focus on natural diamonds as reasons for the shift. Similarly, GIA has replaced its 4Cs grading system for lab-grown diamonds with a simplified scale, categorising them as either premium or standard.

IGI’s decision to maintain its grading standards highlights a divergence in the industry’s approach to synthetic stones. While some labs argue that distinct systems are needed to address market confusion, IGI insists on treating lab-grown diamonds with the same rigour as natural ones, reflecting their identical physical and chemical properties.

Lab-grown diamonds remain a significant part of IGI’s operations, accounting for 54 percent of its certifications. In the first quarter of this year, the institute reported a 10-percent revenue increase, driven by a rise in lab-grown diamond grading. (Photo courtesy: IGI)
