WDC calls for conflict diamonds expending definition

16-11-2018

The World Diamond Council (WDC) voiced for an expended definition of conflict diamonds, a proposal put forward by the Canadian government, at the Plenary Session of the Kimberley Process (KP) in Belgium. The suggested definition includes “rough diamonds used by public security forces or private (including criminal or mercenary) armed groups to acquire wealth through the illegal control, bribery, taxation, extortion or dispossession of people” and “acquired through systematic and widespread violence, forced labour, the worst forms of child labour, or through violations of international humanitarian law”. WDC President Stephane Fischler commented that the definition is an opportunity to make a difference in the lives of people residing in some of the most challenged diamond-producing nations around the world.
