Alrosa launches the first auction of large fancy-coloured diamonds

19-9-2018

The world’s largest diamond miner Alrosa presented its first collection of large fancy-coloured diamonds on 14 September 2018 at the Hong Kong Jewellery & Gem Fair. This is a stepping stone of a new strategy, executed by Alrosa to become the world leader in the production of fancy-coloured polished diamonds, said the company.

The collection showcased in Hong Kong comprises of 250 diamonds of different shapes and hues. Together with the official presentations, the stones are put up on the ‘True Colours’ auction, scheduled on 19 September. Auction results will be announced later in September. The company also plans to run the ‘True Colours’ auction regularly in future.

The key stones of the collection, which are expected to be the most expensive lots, include an 11-carat fancy vivid yellow diamond, an orange-yellow oval diamond of over 15 carats, and an 11-carat cushion-cut deep purple diamond. According to the Gemological Institute of America (GIA), the deep purple is the largest diamond of this colour ever graded by the lab.

Fancy-coloured diamonds are found in all deposits of Alrosa, but two areas can boast of greatest reserves – alluvial mines of JSC ‘Anabar Diamonds’ in Yakutia and the open-pit of PJSC ‘Severalmaz’ in the Arkhangelsk region in Russia.

Starting 2018, Alrosa sorts fancy-coloured diamonds according to a new technology, that includes almost all hues and colour grades. Most of these diamonds are processed by Diamonds Alrosa, the company’s polished diamond branch.

Evgeny Agureev, sales director of Alrosa said: “Alrosa polished branch now focuses on the processing of large and fancy-coloured diamonds and the subsequent sales. We are the world’s largest producer of diamonds, and that gives reason to believe that we are also ahead in terms of fancy-coloured rough diamond production. Today, Alrosa produces at least seven thousand carats of fancy-coloured diamonds per year. We have all it takes to dominate the market of fancy-coloured diamonds. The collection presented in Hong Kong demonstrates our capabilities.”
