De Beers rough production +36% in Q2 2017

De Beers announced its production report for the second quarter of 2017 on 20 July 2017. Rough production increased 36 percent to 8.7 million carats in line with higher production forecast for 2017, reflecting stable trading conditions and the contribution from its recently launchedGahcho Kué mine in Canada, according to the miner.

In Botswana, production rose 14 percent to 5.9 million carats. In Namibia’, production grew 32 percent to 0.4 million carats. Production in South Africa surged 71 percent to 1.4 million carats largely as a result of higher grades at Venetia. In Canada, production climbed almost six-fold to one million carats due to the ramp-up of Gahcho Kué.

For the first half of 2017, the group sold 19.1 million carats consolidated sales, compared with 17.2 million carats in the same period last year. De Beers said its average rough price index rose four percent during the half-year. However, the average price achieved fell 12 percent year-on-year to US$156 per carat.
