EU leads KP in 2018

4-1-2018

Italian politician Federica Mogherini, who is also the high representative for foreign affairs and security policy of European Union (EU), will take over Kimberley Process (KP)’s chairmanship this year.

Back when the role announcement was made, Mogherini said: “It (KP) is part of our work for human rights, to make sure that diamonds produce wealth, not modern slavery. It has spread the idea that natural resources belong to communities, not militias. The main strength of the Kimberley Process has always been that it looks beyond governments.” She looks forward to working closely with all stakeholders in 2018.

The leadership of KP switches every year. The EU, which last chaired KP in 2007, was the vice chairman last year when Australia led KP. India is the vice-chair this year and will chair KP in 2019.

Under KP, participating states adhere to control imports and exports of rough diamonds. Participating states can only legally trade with other participating members who have met the minimum requirements of the scheme. International shipments of rough diamonds must be accompanied by a process certificate guaranteeing of conflict-free.
