HRD Antwerp grades synthetics like naturals

14-3-2019

The Belgian grading laboratory HRD Antwerp aligns the colour and clarity grading scales of synthetic diamonds with the grading system of natural stones after an internal decision to supply customers with the most accurate grading report possible, providing a true description of the diamond.

The grading documents for loose synthetics issued in 2013 now expanded synthetics’ colour categories from five to 13 and clarity grades from five to 10. 4Cs terminology is also launched in the update matches the certificates it issues for mined diamonds. “The role of a grading laboratory is to be 100% impartial, and tell the consumer about the exact quality of the stone...[whether] lab-grown or natural,” the spokesperson said. It plans to add a report for finished pieces of jewellery set with synthetics in the fall.
