GIA opens laboratory in HK

18-2-2019

Gemological Institute of America (GIA) opens Hong Kong laboratory at Goldin Financial Global Centre in Kowloon Bay. Susan Jacques, GIA president, Thomas Moses, GIA EVP, Lawrence Ma, Founding president of Diamond Federation of Hong Kong (DFHK) and John Valley from its board of governors cut the ribbon this morning.

The laboratory occupies the entire floor of the centre, including inventory, a 50-diamond-grader diamond grading sector, coloured stones and pearl grading sector which currently holds 20 graders, photographic studio and customer service centre etc. Each stone will be examined by at least two graders and four graders at most to ensure the integrity and accuracy of every report it issues.

GIA has added alexandrite to its Colored Stone Identification & Origin Report services early this month. The Identification & Origin Report describes whether the stone is natural or laboratory-grown, identifies the type of gemstone, includes any detectable treatments and offers a research-based opinion on the geographic origin of the stone, according to GIA. The report also contains a detailed description of the gemstone including cut, shape, weight, measurement and colour, with a photograph of the gemstone.
