Inspiration from life

The 35th Hong Kong Watch & Clock Design Competition, divided into open group and student group, with the theme ‘Innovative Craftsman’ and ‘Colourful World’ respectively, revealed six winning pieces among 100 entries on 29 August 2018. The annual competition was hosted by HKTDC Hong Kong Watch & Clock Fair 2018 and co-organised by the Hong Kong Watch Manufacturers Association (HKWMA) and The Federation of Hong Kong Watch Trades & Industries.

‘Time Capturer’ designed by Lee Sheung Wah was named the open group’s champion. His piece is inspired by a classic camera with the lens as the dial and the camera body as the case to pay homage to film photography. Lam Yuet Wan, from Hong Kong Design Institute, was crowned the champion of the student group with ‘Aurora’, a piece applied a bridge of pyroxene crystals in red, green, orange and blue, depicting the atmospheric phenomenon of coloured lights across the sky usually seen in Polar regions. She was awarded a cash prize of HK$15,000 and a visit to Baselworld next year.
