Thai craftsmanship glitters at BGJF

The Ministry of Commerce’s Department of International Trade Promotion (DITP) opened the door of the 64th Bangkok Gems & Jewelry Fair (BGJF) themed Thailand’s Magic Hands: The Spirit of Jewellery Making from 10 to14 September 2019 at IMPACT Muang Thong Thani.

Over 1,000 companies occupying 2,100 booths at the fair attracted more than 15,000 visitors from 110 countries and regions with half of them are foreign visitors, a 13 percent up from the last September edition. DITP director general Banjongjitt Angsusingh said the total revenue was over US$70 million and immediate sales generated at the event were worth US$16 million. The highest value of trade was gemstones at US$24 million, accounting for 34 percent of all sales, followed by silver jewellery at US$ 16 million (22.9 percent) and fine jewellery at US$ 15 million (20.9 percent). Polished gemstone company Gemburi said India and China were the biggest buyers. The former aimed for commercial-quality rubies and the latter looked for high-quality Burmese rubies.

With focus on promoting local craftsmanship to the international audience, ‘New Faces’ and ‘The Jewellers’ zones featured over 160 local designers and manufacturers from 31 provinces across Thailand. Two brands who won the design excellence award in the creative & innovative fashion category were invited to exhibit in the zones. Porana’s award-winning Pa Sinh collection speaks Thai in a subtle way. Taking motifs of traditional Thai skirt Pa Sinh worn by ethnic groups in rural areas, the brand simplifies the patterns and creates staking rings in 14-karat gold, 18-karat gold or platinum with gemstones including diamonds, rubies, emeralds, yellow sapphires, moonstones, etc.

The Gem and Jewelry Institute of Thailand (GIT) showcased the success of its Development of Gem and Jewelry Industry in Provincial Region at the fair. The two-year project visited industry players across all 15 provinces where over a million people in total are working in the gem and jewellery industry. A team of GIT professionals and renowned jewellery designers were sent to teach potential local businesses how to create unique identity, design that meets global market needs and implement effective marketing plan to increase competitiveness. Over 10 selected brands displayed their enhanced pieces at the fair.

The 65th Bangkok Gems and Jewelry Fair will be held on 25 to 29 February 2020 at Challenger Halls 1, 2 and 3 at IMPACT Muang Thong Thani.
