Essentially everlasting

It is perhaps the ultimate manifestation of industrial design and ergonomics in modern jewellery making.

Futuristic yet classic, powerful yet flexible, fine jewellery from Italian brand Mattia Cielo is minimal and linear in style, intricate and sophisticated in essence. As founder and owner Mattia Cielo puts it: “A piece of essential and everlasting jewellery can’t incorporate too much contemporary messages, otherwise it’ll get old.” Employing a combined technology from different industries including medical, automotive and aerospace is what makes his jewellery enduring.

“We apply ancient Italian craftsmanship to technology from outside of the jewellery industry. With the most micro-mechanical technique in our country, we can make jewellery light and soft. We need to be essential in design and at the same time being super wearable,” he told Hong Kong Jewellery at a recently interview.

The Rugiada collection, for instance, is among the signature designs of Mattia Cielo that signify the perfect marriage of technology and aesthetics. In the form of multiple rows of 18-karat gold wire with titanium alloy used in the aerospace industry, the Rugiada pieces are soft, elastic and extremely ergonomic, creating a sensory experience for the wearer. The diamond-set collection comes in several lines namely ‘Diamanti’, ‘Tennis’, ‘Pavè’, ‘Gocce’ and ‘Pietre’ which is also matched with gemstones.

The ingenious use of titanium in the Ghiaccio collection creates bold and edgy designs with utmost comfort and lightness. Armadillo statement rings have stunned the world by the symmetrical and asymmetrical designs featuring movable shields and vibrant colours. A unique construction of elements turns the Pavone collection into a dynamic wearable art that flows with the movements of the wearer.

Prior to venturing into his own business in 2006, Mattia Cielo worked in Cielo Venezia 1270 founded by his father Sergio Cielo. “It is a major company in Italy, but we can’t sell anything abroad. The other reason I started Mattia Cielo was that from a jewellery point of view, there are a lot of companies making jewellery with the focus on precious gemstones and materials, but not much on design. I realised that the market was missing something,” he said.

Fine jewellery is a lifetime statement representing our personality in long term. “The job of jewellery is to serve the deep need of humanity for making social, religious, or political statements. Gold is the most endurable metal that is resistant to water and air. Diamond is the hardest material on earth. They are mostly used in our jewellery because of the message,” he said.

Since 2008, Mattia Cielo has been introducing new collections to an international audience at Baselworld where the brand met Masterpiece by king fook for the first time. The Hong Kong-based jewellery group has been representing Mattia Cielo in the region since then. “Masterpiece allows us to show personally to its forward-thinking customers, let them feel and touch our designs which is very important,” Cielo said.

Despite the lacklustre reputation of Baselworld of late, Mattia Cielo has decided to keep its presence at the fair in 2019. “As a small independent company, we are still growing. The show is the place for us to talk to our partners so long as it is able to develop a message that is unique for the market,” he said.
